Embracing Sustainability: The Significance of Eco-Friendly Packaging in Warehouse Facilities

In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, where environmental consciousness is gaining traction, companies are increasingly recognising the importance of integrating sustainability into their operations. A crucial aspect of this shift towards greener practices is the adoption of eco-friendly packaging products in warehouse facilities. With an emphasis on minimising the ecological footprint, warehouse managers are turning to innovative solutions like the ‘Better Pack 555eFACM’ electric water-activated tape dispenser and Pacmasta EcoShred Cardboard shredders to name just a few, to enhance their packaging practices while staying environmentally responsible.

Eco-Friendly Packaging: A Necessity, Not a Choice

The exponential rise in e-commerce and global trade has led to a surge in packaging materials being used across industries. However, the indiscriminate use of plastic-based materials and wasteful packaging practices have placed an immense burden on our environment.

Enter eco-friendly packaging, a sustainable alternative that not only reduces waste but also significantly decreases a company’s carbon footprint.

Innovative Solutions for a Greener Tomorrow

Better Pack 555eFACM Electric Water-Activated Tape Dispenser: One of the pioneers in eco-friendly packaging equipment, the Better Pack 555eFACM electric water-activated tape dispenser revolutionises the packaging process. Unlike traditional plastic tapes, water-activated tapes are made from renewable materials and are fully biodegradable. The Better Pack 555eFACM takes this sustainable solution to the next level with its energy-efficient design and cutting-edge features.

This dispenser offers consistent tape dispensing with minimal effort, enhancing packaging efficiency in warehouses. The electric dispenser’s cutting mechanism ensures accurate tape lengths, reducing wastage and optimising tape usage. Additionally, by eliminating the need for additional adhesives or tapes, water-activated tapes contribute to a cleaner recycling process, further promoting sustainability.

Features of Water-Activated Tapes:

  • Eco-Friendly Materials: Water-activated tapes are crafted from renewable resources such as paper, making them an eco-conscious choice.
  • Secure Sealing: These tapes form a strong bond with the packaging, providing tamper-evident sealing that enhances the security of the shipped products.
  • Customisation: Water-activated tapes can be printed with branding, instructions, or other messages, transforming them into a branding tool while remaining sustainable.
  • Biodegradability: Unlike plastic tapes that contribute to landfill waste, water-activated tapes break down naturally, reducing long-term environmental impact.

Pacmasta EcoShred Cardboard Shredders: Cardboard boxes are the backbone of packaging, but their disposal can be a challenge.

Enter Pacmasta EcoShred Cardboard shredders, which addresses this issue by transforming used cardboard into eco-friendly packaging material. These shredders efficiently cut cardboard into manageable pieces, which can then be repurposed as protective packaging materials, reducing the need for additional fillers like bubble wrap or foam peanuts.

By reusing cardboard, warehouses not only contribute to waste reduction but also save on packaging costs. This sustainable approach also aligns with the circular economy model, wherein resources are reused to create a closed-loop system, minimising waste generation.

The Bigger Picture: Business Benefits of Eco-Friendly Packaging

While the environmental benefits of embracing eco-friendly packaging are evident, businesses can also reap numerous advantages by incorporating these practices into their warehouse operations:

  • Cost Savings: Switching to sustainable packaging products can lead to significant cost savings in the long run. For instance, using water-activated tapes can reduce the need for excessive tape usage, while cardboard shredders cut down the expenses associated with buying additional protective materials.
  • Enhanced Brand Image: In an age where consumers actively seek out environmentally responsible brands, adopting eco-friendly packaging can enhance a company’s brand image and reputation. It showcases the company’s commitment to sustainability, attracting conscious consumers and potentially increasing customer loyalty.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Many regions are tightening regulations regarding packaging waste and its impact on the environment. By adopting eco-friendly packaging practices early, businesses can stay ahead of these regulations and avoid potential fines or penalties.

In the quest for a more sustainable future, every industry must play its part, and warehouse facilities are no exception. The utilisation of innovative products like the ‘Better Pack 555eFACM’ electric water-activated tape dispenser and Pacmasta EcoShred Cardboard shredders showcases the commitment of warehouse managers towards eco-friendly practices. Beyond reducing waste and minimising environmental impact, these products offer economic benefits and strengthen a company’s brand reputation.

Changes to the Instant Asset Write-Off Scheme 2023

Changes to the Instant Asset Write-Off Scheme 2023

If you are a business with a turnover of less than $10 million per financial year, you can now deduct the full cost of an asset costing up to $20,000, through the Instant Asset Write Off (IAWO) Scheme!

⚠️⚠️However, from 1 July, 2023, the instant write off is currently only legislated to be available for assets costing up to $1,000 instead of the current $20,000 threshold. If you think this change may affect your business, please continue reading.

What will the new Instant Asset Write-Off (IAWO) scheme allow my business to write off?

Like previous years, the new IAWO (instant asset write-off) scheme will allow businesses to claim a tax deduction for the full value of an eligible asset after its initial purchase, rather than to claim depreciated amounts over the following years, from its initial date of purchase.

The scheme will cover purchases with a cost of up to $20,000, which is the same amount that was previously legislated in 2015. The government’s intention with the new IAWO is to improve cash flow for small businesses while lowering compliance and accounting costs from managing asset depreciation over several years.

When does the current IAWO scheme finish and when does the new one start?

The current version of the IAWO scheme is due to finish on June 30, 2023, with the new IAWO scheme scheduled to start on July 1, 2023.

This new version of the scheme will be in place from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, which means that any businesses wishing to take advantage of the current turnover rules and regulations will need to purchase any new assets and have them in place by the upcoming June 30, 2023, deadline.

What assets can businesses apply to the new IAWO scheme?

The new IAWO will apply to all eligible depreciable assets if they were purchased for less than the $20,000 threshold.

The $20,000 threshold applies on an asset-by-asset basis, with the Australian government saying it provides businesses with the ability to instantly write off multiple assets. According to the government, assets valued at $20,000 or more, which are not eligible for an immediate tax deduction, will continue to qualify for depreciation at a rate of 15% in the first income year, and at a rate of 30% in each subsequent income year.

Always seek the advice of your accountant with regard to thresholds, eligibility and your entitlements.

Importance of preventative maintenance

Preventative maintenance is the regular maintenance of equipment and assets to keep them running and to avoid breakdown costs and unnecessary downtime. Our preventative maintenance program (PMP) includes planning, scheduling, and recording of all services. A common question asked is why do I need a preventative maintenance program? Listed are just some of the advantages of signing a preventative maintenance contract.

Benefits:

Improved safety. A lot of workplace accidents are related to equipment failure due to a lack of consistent maintenance. A preventative maintenance program will not mitigate all workplace accidents, but rather significantly decrease the chance of such accidents.

Increased lifetime of equipment.

Optimize efficiency.

Reduce costs. Constantly maintaining prevents hefty expenses from constant repairs and breakdowns.

Let’s look at an example using a pallet wrapper, an expensive asset that plays a crucial role in the operation of your company on a daily basis. The initial cost varies between $8000 – $20,000, within a year of using the machine, you could have spent thousands in reactive maintenance. A preventative maintenance plan is designed to significantly reduce these costs and increase equipment lifespan.

Identifying what assets require a preventative maintenance program is important, these are the assets that your company uses on a daily basis. A PMP helps a business increase their bottom line, by minimizing downtime, improving efficiency, and reducing breakdowns.

What is affecting shipping imports to Australia?

shipping-containers-at-port

shipping-containers-at-port

Australia is in an import/export crisis as it recovers from the recent pandemic. With international and national border closures and a surge in consumer demand for imports, Australian imported products have been impacted exponentially.

Factory closures worldwide due to COVID have delayed the manufacturing of goods for export/import. High online shopping demands coupled with limited availability are driving the cost to the consumer up during the lead-up to Christmas this year.

COVID has affected international container shipping arrivals, and increased pricing is predicted to soar well into next year. High docking fees and port congestion have caused massive delays with some ships waiting more than a week before they can berth and unload.

World Container Index

COVID delays have caused canceled or bypassed shipping schedules which in turn have had a big impact on delivery times to consumers. The infrastructure needed at Australian ports for containerised imports and exports has not been maintained to keep pace with the shipping industry. There are only around half the shipping lines coming into Australian ports than before the pandemic.

The delays go right down through the supply chain from manufacturing, shipping and exporting, to the trucks waiting hours to pick up containers, the containers lost in stacks of other containers, and so on. In the lead up to Christmas, consumer demand will drive up the price of imports and more shipping disruptions can be expected.

Another blow to shipped goods is the rise in the cost of paper pulp for packaging such as cartons and moulded supports and fillers. Corrugated cardboard cartons are the most used eCommerce packaging. Other packaging essentials such as tapes, pallet wraps, and strapping have also seen a huge rise in cost. Manufacturers who rely on cardboard packaging to protect products during shipping can’t absorb another hike in cost, so the price is passed on to the consumer.

For goods like electronics, appliances, and other household items, shoppers will be faced with low or zero stock for items with long wait times, up to months to receive purchases. If you are a manufacturer or retailer relying on those packaging items like stretch film, corrugated cardboard, tapes, and strapping you would have needed to order much earlier in the year to keep up with demand.

Christmas is looking a little frugal this year if you haven’t followed advice to get ahead of the freight delays and get your orders in by July and August. Even if you were diligent and ordered early, you could receive your package too late as long factory closures in the big manufacturing countries like Korea and China continue recovering and playing catch up.

Summary of factors causing prices to rise:

  • Imbalance between supply and demand. Circulation of containers has dropped dramatically compared to pre-Covid.
  • Global pandemic.
  • Trucking and rail delays causing port congestion.

Should I Crimp a Heat Seal?

heat-sealer

Stand up pouches and poly-tubing bags are a packaging innovation appearing more on supermarket shelves, at markets and used by small business e-Commerce. They have become popular due to some great properties such as their ability to stand up on shelving without extra display and they keep their contents fresh and moisture-free. They are a brilliant alternative to space-consuming cartons and glass bottles and jars, cheaper to manufacture and ship plus they use fewer resources to manufacture. It is easy and cost-effective to label and brand, even for the small manufacturer.

Heat sealing

Heat sealers are used to seal laminated layers of materials of which contains some thermoplastics. Poly tubing, gusset bags and stand-up pouches can be made from foils, cellophane and coated papers, and the thermoplastic layer melting point welds the opening end together to form a closed seal.

Crimping

A crimped seal is a textured pattern seal, made by a heat sealer with crimping accessories. Crimping the seal improves the strength of the packet, helps to avoid delamination and adds tamper-evident security to your packaging. Crimping also gives a professional appearance to pouches and bags.

What type of heat sealer do I need?

The size and type of heat sealer you need depends on the thickness and type of the packaging material, the size of your pouches or bags, type of content and how many seals you need to achieve per minute i.e., the volume of your production line. The thicker your material is the higher the heat and longer time needed in the heat clamps seal it efficiently.

You will find a wide selection of heat sealers on our product pages here. We are bound to have the right one for you.

The Benefits of Pre-stretch Pallet Wrap

The Benefits of Pre-stretch Pallet Wrap

Pre-stretch film features

Pre-stretch pallet wrap comes in rolls of plastic film that has been pre-stretched with some remaining elasticity, allowing it to be stretched to its limit when applied by hand or machine. This allows the stretch film to deliver a tighter wrap with higher wrap performance and reliable holding force on the goods during transit. Pre-stretch film performs better for hand wrapping applications and requires less energy during application by workers to complete a sufficient wrap. This helps avoid fatigue and workplace injury.

As a result of pre-stretching, the rolls of film are lighter with double the amount of film per roll giving much more film length than conventional pallet wraps. Around 50% of film is needed therefore less environmental waste is produced to get a good result.

Machine-Pre-stretch-Film-orbitwrap

Load stability

There are many benefits of pre-stretch film, but the most important benefit is increased load stability during transport. Pre-stretch film is stronger and has a higher holding force than conventional non-stretch wraps. It is able to withstand multiple loading and unloading situations without the shifting of goods and maintains its holding force in many different freight scenarios.

Cost

Pre-stretch film uses 50% less film than conventional wraps so materials reduction equals cost savings. You can expect a cost saving of up to 40% by switching to pre-stretch film. Also, the reduction in material use is better for the environment as there is less waste to dispose of.

Film memory

Pre-stretch film memory ensures that when it is applied to a load it shrinks and tightens after application, giving it an efficient holding force. This is the main reason why film is pre-stretched. Once the film is unrolled and wrapped the energy contained in the stretched wrap shrinks back into itself, tightening its grip on the wrapped object which increases the load tension.

Necking down is eliminated

Pre-stretch film does not neck down during the wrapping process which saves wrapping time and material. When conventional films neck down they narrow when stretched out. It has been described as similar to stretching out bubble gum. When film necks down more film coverage is required to complete a wrap job. Necking down also requires increased revolutions of wrap to cover a load. Adding the two together there is more cost in materials and time lost when using conventional non-pre-stretched wraps.

Easier hand application

If you haven’t upgraded to a pre-stretch pallet wrapping machine as yet you will inevitably be applying your wrap by hand. Conventional wrap needs to be stretched up to 100-150% to get the required holding force, which is impossible to achieve if you are relying on hand application. Pre-stretch film is easier for hand application as the rolls are less than half the weight of non-pre-stretch wraps and requires less physical strength to get consistency and the required tension for holding force.

Material strength

Pre-stretch film has rolled edges which helps to avoid damage to the rolls when mishandled and dropped. It is also puncture and tear-resistant. It will wrap around edges without damage to the stretched film and will be able to withstand the conditions of transportation, delivering goods to their destination intact. This saves on losses and returned goods, which end up being valuable cost savings. Pre-stretch film also handles various environmental conditions including humidity and extremes in temperature.

Load stability

Pre-stretched film has superior cling that allows a film tail to stick to itself, avoiding flapping around and slowly unravelling. When this film is used on irregular loads it is a stabilising factor that holds everything together so it can be shipped in one piece arriving intact at its destination.

Orbitwrap Save

Packline supplies an innovative blown octene based pre-stretched wrap Orbitwrap Save. This product will revolutionise your pallet wrapping with its high remaining elasticity that stretches further than other stretch wraps whether applied mechanically or by hand. You get that extra length and cost savings by using it over conventional pallet wrap, saving over 50% of film used per load.

By incorporating Orbitwrap Save into your pallet wrapping application you get a high-performance wrap that is puncture resistant, high in elasticity and does not neck down. This instantly reduces the number of revolutions needed to wrap a pallet. The result is far less wrap is needed and less time is taken to complete a wrap.
